Ways Your Home Could Be Losing Heat in Winter

December 4, 2022

winter home Many Americans are trying to figure out ways to save money – especially with inflation and the holidays. One way people may be losing money is right out the window – literally. There is so much energy and heat that is lost through the windows and walls of our homes, that you’d be surprised just how much money you could save by updating and replacing things before the cold sets in.

Here are some great things to do to your home this winter that could save you money on your heating bill.

Windows

Did you know that up to 25% of heat loss can be attributed to your windows and doors combined? Even if you keep your windows closed, there are other ways heat can sneak through. Worn-out or missing weather stripping can be a culprit as well as an old or improper caulk job. If your windows are warped or have gaps between them and the trim, this could be a sign it’s time to get new windows.

If you don’t already have them, double or triple-pane insulated glass windows are a great upgrade that keeps heat inside far better than older single-pane varieties.

Doors

Your doors are another place where heat can literally slip right through the cracks. Similar to your windows, poor weather stripping, gaps and cracks are all things to check for. Depending on how severe the gaps and cracks are, you may need to install a new door. Fiberglass and steel doors are an option to add even more insulation. Updating your weather stripping will help as well.

Be sure to check all your doors, including your main entry doors, storm doors, and patio doors. Every door matters, and the more that are properly maintained, the better.

Siding

Your walls can account for as much as 35% of heat loss, making this the biggest source by far. That’s why properly installed siding and high-quality insulation are so important. Though siding is typically seen as a mostly cosmetic addition, it can be a great opportunity to add more insulation. However, improperly fit siding can contribute to heat loss as well as using less than ideal materials.

When making any updates to your home, it always pays to opt for quality. Not only will you save money on your heating bill, but you’ll also get to spend the winter months in a warm, cozy and comfortable environment!
